Leipziger Platz

The octagonal square just east of Potsdamer Platz has been rebuilt to echo its pre-war layout. Streets meet at crisp angles, forming a clear geometric frame around the open space. While the plan mirrors the past, the architecture does not. Contemporary facades rise higher than their predecessors, giving the area a distinctly modern skyline.

Architecture and Purpose

Rather than historic replicas, the surrounding buildings are new constructions with clean lines, glass, and steel. Their scale is noticeably taller than the pre-war structures, creating a contrast between old urban form and current design trends. The result is a coordinated but unmistakably modern city block.

The square brings together a mix of uses, from offices and retail to cultural and civic spaces. Among these is the Embassy of Canada, which highlights the area’s international role and adds a diplomatic presence to the everyday rhythm of shops and workplaces.
