Marienkirche stands in Berlin’s historical center as a fine example of Gothic architecture. Built in the late 13th century, it is the city’s second-oldest church. Its dark brick walls, pointed arches, and quiet interior reflect centuries of Berlin’s history, from medieval times to the modern era.
The church’s tower rises to about 90 meters, making it the tallest church tower in Berlin. Yet, beside the massive Fernsehturm (TV Tower), it can appear modest in size. This contrast creates a striking cityscape, where a medieval church and a 20th-century landmark share the same skyline.
While the church dates to the 1200s, its tower tells a different story. The current tower was added in the late 18th century by Carl Gotthard Langhans, the architect best known for designing the Brandenburg Gate. His work introduces a neoclassical note to the Gothic structure, blending styles across centuries.
