Neptunbrunnen

Neptunbrunnen

Berlin, Germany

A bronze fountain by sculptor Reinhold Begas stands as a gift from the city of Berlin to the Kaiser, unveiled in 1891. At its center, Neptune rises with a trident, commanding the scene from a grand seashell. Around him, sea-nymphs with webbed feet lift and support the figure, their forms part human, part aquatic.

Figures and flowing water

Creatures of the sea surround the base, sending arcs of water toward the central figure. A seal, an alligator, snakes, and turtles appear among the sculpted company, each adding movement and character to the display. Nearby, mermaids pour water into the basin, their arms wrapped around nets heavy with fish and other ocean catch, emphasizing the abundance of the sea.
