Schloss Bellevue

Schloss Bellevue has served as the official residence of the President of Germany since 1994. The role is largely ceremonial today, and while the palace provides the formal setting for state duties, it rarely functions as a private home. Only Roman Herzog, who served from 1994 to 1999, chose to live here. Later presidents opted for a quieter apartment on the edge of Berlin, using the palace mainly for work and hosting.

State functions and public appearances

The president typically welcomes guests, receives delegations, and holds public events at Schloss Bellevue. Its grand rooms and central location make it a stage for official ceremonies and press moments, with the building working more as a representative backdrop than a residence.

Planning a visit

Guided tours are available, but demand is high and access is tightly scheduled. Booking may be required up to nine months in advance. Even confirmed tours can be rescheduled on short notice if an official event takes priority, so flexibility is essential when planning around the palace’s calendar.
