Istanbul Military Museum
Istanbul Military Museum.
The cannon hall of the Istanbul Military Museum (Turkish Askeri Müze) is located under the raked floor of the lecture theatre. I paid an extra 6 YTL for the privilege of taking photographs in the museum, and there is nothing on the photography ticket to say that I may not publish such photographs.

A treat in the museum is the performance of its Mehter band, which can be seen at special occasions all over the country and also has a special hall for performances. The Mehter Troop also performs as invited guests at events worldwide as ambassadors of Turkish musical traditions.

Abdülhamid II, His Imperial Majesty, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, was the 34th sultan and ruled from August 31, 1876, until he was deposed on April 27, 1909. He oversaw a period of decline in the power and extent of the Empire and was the last Ottoman Sultan to rule with absolute power.

This is a rifle with a magnetic mechanism and oil-driven operation, made as a model but never mass-produced due to the complexity of the mechanism. Ottoman, early 20th century.
An Austrian-made Gatling gun by Paget.
The museum has several more or less curious multi-barrel guns from all ages. I have no further information about these.
On May 29, 1453, Sultan Mehmet II "the Conqueror" captured Constantinople after a 53-day siege and proclaimed the city as the new capital of his Ottoman Empire. His first task was to rejuvenate the city economically, establishing the Grand Bazaar and inviting the fleeing Orthodox and Catholic inhabitants to return. Captured prisoners were freed to settle in the city, and provincial governors in Rumelia and Anatolia were ordered to send four thousand families to settle there, whether Muslim, Christian, or Jew, to create a unique cosmopolitan society. This is a diorama in the museum. An even more impressive one is now at the "Panorama 1453 History Museum."

Istanbul Military Museum

Istanbul, Turkey

The Istanbul Military Museum showcases a fascinating collection of five thousand artifacts, spanning from the Ottoman era up to World War II. Among these historical pieces, one item stands out—a massive chain once used by the Byzantines. This chain was famously stretched across the mouth of the Golden Horn in 1453 to prevent the Sultan's navy from entering during the siege of Constantinople.

Janissary Band Performances

In the museum's courtyard, the Janissary Band, or Mehter Takımı, performs each afternoon at 15:00. Recognized as the world’s oldest military band, they play traditional march music while dressed in authentic uniforms. Their concerts bring a unique atmosphere to the museum, blending music and military history for visitors to experience firsthand.
