St Giles-without-Cripplegate

London, Great Britain

St Giles-without-Cripplegate is a medieval Grade I listed church with a storied past. This historic church was significant during the English Revolution and served as the parish church for some of the most influential Puritans of the time.

Historical Significance

Among its notable associations, St Giles-without-Cripplegate was where Oliver Cromwell's marriage took place. The church also holds the burial site of the famous poet John Milton, who is known for his epic work "Paradise Lost".

Architectural Features

The church was originally home to the Morning Exercises, a series of sermons and teachings that were central to Puritan religious life. While much of the original structure was lost during the Blitz, the church was carefully rebuilt according to the original plans, preserving its historical essence. The tower, however, still stands as a remnant of the original building.
