The Church of Carolus Borromeus (Carolus Borromeuskerk) at the Hendrik Conscienceplein in Antwerp is a former Jesuit church in Baroque style. It was designed by fathers Franciscus de Aguilon S.J. and Pieter Huyssens S.J., and was built between 1615 and 1621. Initially dedicated to Ignatius de Loyola, it was renamed in 1773 to the church of Charles Borromeo following the suppression of the Jesuit Order. Since 1803, it has served as a parish church. The church is a typical product of the Counter-Reformation, during which the Catholic Church sought to regain the people's confidence through grandeur, with the Jesuits leading this movement. The facade of the church is inspired by Serlio's books on architecture. The church originally featured numerous paintings and ceiling paintings by Rubens, which were destroyed during a fire in 1718. After the fire, the church was given a more sober interior.
