This magnificent Beaux Arts style building was originally built as and remains a "luxurious" residential hotel on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. It was designed by architect Paul E. M. Duboy, and its construction was completed in 1908. Over the years, it has been home to many famous residents, from actors, opera singers, and artists to athletes and politicians. Among its interesting tenants was Plato's Retreat, an open-to-the-public "swinger sex club" that was shut down by Mayor Ed Koch in 1985 for health issues. The Ansonia has been a true egalitarian residence in deed. This is a photograph of the 73rd Street facade. The elegant 17-story Ansonia building, completed in 1904, stands proudly with its Beaux Arts architecture. It was originally designed to be New York City's first air-conditioned hotel, offering a luxurious residential experience.

Home to the Famous

Throughout its history, the Ansonia has been home to many renowned figures. Legendary baseball player Babe Ruth once resided here, sharing the space with Italian tenor Enrico Caruso. Igor Stravinsky, the modernist composer, also called the Ansonia home, as did the acclaimed Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini, known for his work with the NBC Symphony.

Writers found inspiration within the walls of the Ansonia too. Theodore Dreiser, known for his literary contributions, lived there, as did Isaac Bashevis Singer, the celebrated storyteller. The building's vibrant history is filled with tales from these famous residents.

From Hotel to Condominium

Originally a residential hotel, the Ansonia has since transformed into a condominium. While its purpose may have changed, the building continues to captivate with its architectural beauty and storied past.
