The bridge crosses the river by a single span of 1,595 feet, suspended by four cables, each 15½ inches in diameter and composed of 5,434 parallel steel wires. The strength of each cable is 12,000 tons. The length of each land span is 930 feet, with the New York approach measuring 1,562½ feet and the Brooklyn approach 971 feet. The total length of the bridge and its approaches is 5,988 feet 6 inches. The height of the towers is 278 feet, while the roadway is 119 feet 3 inches above high water at the towers and 135 feet at the center of the span. The bridge is 85 feet wide, with tracks for cars, a roadway for carriages, and walks for pedestrians. It is illuminated at night by the United States Illuminating Co. with 35 electric lights of 2,000 candle power each. Construction commenced in January 1870 and was completed in May 1883, with an estimated total cost of $15,000,000.
