Sheep Meadow

The Sheep Meadow in Central Park, New York City, is a 15-acre lawn named after the sheep that grazed there until 1934. The flock was housed in a sheepfold, which was subsequently converted into Tavern on the Green. The lawn was restored by the City of New York in 1981. The area is reserved for quiet enjoyment only, with musical instruments prohibited and earphones required for radios. As of 2007, the lawn is open from mid-April to mid-November, from 11:00 am to dusk.

A spacious green lawn once served as a home to a flock of sheep. These sheep grazed peacefully in the meadow, cared for in their nearby pen. This pen was a Victorian-style building, which today has been transformed into the Tavern on the Green restaurant.
