Strawberry Fields

New York, United States of America

In 1981, an area in New York's Central Park was named Strawberry Fields in memory of John Lennon, the legendary former Beatle. Lennon was tragically murdered near his home in the Dakota building, just across the street. His widow, Yoko Ono, who still resides in the Dakota, played a significant role in turning this area into a space of remembrance.

A Garden of Peace

Yoko Ono generously donated $1 million to enhance the area, transforming it into a serene garden with hundreds of tree and flower species, including strawberries. The garden serves as a tranquil spot for reflection, honoring Lennon's legacy and his message of peace.

The "Imagine" Mosaic

At the heart of Strawberry Fields lies a simple yet powerful memorial: a floor mosaic with the word "Imagine". This mosaic, a gift from the Italian city of Naples, pays homage to one of Lennon's most famous and evocative songs. It invites visitors to pause and reflect on the ideals of peace and harmony that Lennon championed throughout his life.
