Sainte Chapelle

Paris, France

Sainte-Chapelle in Paris is famous for its stunning stained glass windows that rise almost all the way to the vaulted ceiling. When sunshine pours through, the chapel is filled with bright, colorful light that dances across the rich tile mosaics on the floor. Built by French kings, this church was created to hold sacred relics, including the Crown of Thorns.

The Beauty of Light and Color

The stained glass windows are the main attraction of Sainte-Chapelle. On a sunny day, the glass panels glow with deep reds, blues, and purples, creating a breathtaking scene inside the small chapel. The light not only fills the air but also highlights the dramatic colors on the tiled floor, making the entire space feel magical.

Architectural Highlights

This chapel is a classic example of Rayonnante Gothic architecture, known for its tall windows and delicate stonework. The upper chapel is the best place to see the windows and the play of colored light. Downstairs, the lower level is decorated in an equally ornate style, offering more to discover.

Visitor Information

Sainte-Chapelle is located inside the Courts of Justice, so all visitors have to pass through a security check before entering. The experience inside depends a lot on the weather. On cloudy or rainy days, the famous light show from the windows is less dramatic, but on sunny days, the chapel comes alive with color.
