Casal Rotondo

Rome, Italy

Casal Rotondo stands as the largest mausoleum along the Appian Way, marking the sixth mile of this ancient Roman road. Over time, the structure has been adapted and now houses a small private villa that was once a farmhouse. Despite its size and prominence, the original person or family for whom the mausoleum was built remains a mystery.

Historical Features and Surroundings

Near Casal Rotondo, visitors will notice a distinctive wall assembled from ancient fragments. This wall was constructed by Luigi Canina, a notable 19th-century architect and archaeologist. Some of the ruins set into the wall refer to the Cotta family, but more recent research indicates that this family is not connected to Casal Rotondo itself.
