Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica
The central façade of the Barberini Palace at sunset. The palace was designed in 1625 by Carlo Maderno at the request of Cardinal Maffeo Barberini, who became Pope in 1623 under the name Urban VIII. The building is shaped like a large villa with two H-shaped wings extending into gardens. After the architect's death, Bernini continued the work in collaboration with Francesco Borromini. The columns of the façade (by Bernini) are of three orders: Doric on the ground floor, Ionic on the first floor, and Corinthian pilasters on the second floor. The portico on the ground floor helps lighten the appearance of the building. The rooms on the first floor all have painted ceilings, including that of the main salon, an exceptional work by Pietro da Cortona (The Triumph of Divine Providence). Today, the palace houses the National Gallery of Ancient Art (Galleria nazionale d'arte antica), which includes very famous works such as Raphael's "La Fornarina."
