Museum of Roman Civilization
The entrance to the Museum of Roman Civilization (Museo della Civiltà Romana), which covers history up to the end of the Empire. This museum is located in the EUR district in two buildings from the fascist era, connected by a portico. It contains numerous reproductions and models of ancient Rome, arranged in chronological order from the origins to the end of the Roman Empire. Highlights of the museum include the model of archaic Rome (5th century BC), the 1:250 scale model of Rome in the time of Constantine (306–337), and casts of the entire Trajan's Column depicting episodes from Trajan's war against the Dacians. The creation of the new district of Rome called EUR (Esposizione Universale di Roma) was decided in 1936 by Benito Mussolini (1883–1945) to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the March on Rome with a World's Fair that was to be held in 1942. Some buildings were constructed, but work was halted by the war. The architects in charge of the project were Marcello Piacentini, assisted by Giuseppe Pagano, Luigi Piccinato, Ettore Rossi, and Luigi Vietti. Work resumed in 1951 with the aim of making EUR a business district associated with a residential urban area connected by metro to Rome and by train to Ostia.
