Palazzo Barberini
The entrance of the Barberini Palace. The palace was designed in 1625 by Carlo Maderno at the request of Cardinal Maffeo Barberini, who became Pope in 1623 under the name Urban VIII. The building is shaped like a large villa with two H-shaped wings extending into gardens. After the architect's death, Bernini continued the work in collaboration with Francesco Borromini. The columns of the façade (Bernini) are of three orders: Doric on the ground floor, Ionic on the first floor, and Corinthian in pilasters on the second floor. The portico on the ground floor lightens the appearance of the building. The rooms on the first floor all have painted ceilings, including the main hall, whose ceiling is an exceptional work by Pietro da Cortona (The Triumph of Divine Providence) notable for its size and composition. Today, the palace houses the National Gallery of Ancient Art (Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica), which includes very famous works such as Raphael's "La Fornarina."
