Palazzo Spada

Palazzo Spada

Rome, Italy

Palazzo Spada, an impressive Renaissance palace, was originally built in the 16th century for Cardinal Girolamo Capodiferro. The architecture reflects the grandeur and style typical of this period, with elegant details that highlight the wealth and influence of its first owner.

A New Era Under Cardinal Spada

About one hundred years after its construction, the palace changed hands. It was purchased by Cardinal Bernardino Spada, a notable figure with both political and artistic interests. He decided to restore and update the residence, bringing in the famous architect Francesco Borromini for the project.

The Famous Optical Illusion

During the restoration, Borromini designed one of the palace’s most intriguing features: the arcaded courtyard with a forced perspective. This clever illusion makes the gallery appear much longer than it actually is, using diminishing rows of columns and a rising floor to trick the eye. This masterpiece of optical illusion became one of the highlights of Palazzo Spada, attracting curious visitors and art lovers from around the world.
